Figurine, probably Roman; attempt at correct projection |

Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy figurine of a horse with integrally cast rider, of unknown date. Although reminiscent of a Roman horse and rider figurine, stylistically there is little to indicate that it is of that date. The horse is missing its front legs, the bottom of its hind legs and there is a scar where its tail would have extended. The horse is wearing a bridle with nose strap and head gear represented as moulded ribs. Its eyes and mane are rendered as moulded decoration. Its ears are triangular. The rider is extremely fragmentary with only part of the torso and thighs remaining. He appears to be wearing a short tunic and have bare legs. He is seated on a saddle of cavalry type with triangular expansions at each corner to hold the rider in place. A separate melted fragment found nearby may represent the arm and shoulder of the rider although this identification is by no means certain. The figurine has a length of 71mm, a maximum width of 30mm and a height of 55mm. It weighs 134.62g.
