Description |
English: The cast copper-alloy arm and hand of a probable religious Christ figurine most likely to be c1250-1300 in date. The arm is raised and the shoulder and the rest of the figurine is missing due to old breaks, now worn. The upper half of the surviving arm is covered by a large sleeve. The surviving arm measures c33mm in length, the sleeve is roughly rectangular in shape and measures 25mm in length and c17mm in width. The front face of the sleeve has moulded grooves representing the folds of the cloth. The arm itself is oval in cross-section and tapers towards the wrist, the hand is raised with the first and second fingers are straight and the third and little finger are bent over. The arm and hand are gilded. This hand and arm are very similar in style and posture to an complete example of a Christ, the Book of Llandaf Christ in Majesty, which shows Christ seated on a rainbow, blessing, a book on his left knee, his feet rest on a rainbow. This example is also hollow-cast, gilt, it is dated to c1250-1265 (Alexander and Binski 1987, 308-9, no 259). |
