Title
Figurine
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy probable figurine the front end of which survives, the rest is missing due to old breaks, now worn. The remains of this figurine appears to be in the shape of a bulls(?) head and shoulders. It measures 31mm in height, 33mm in width and 18mm in thickness. The underside is flat and the probable bulls head is bent downwards and long and rectangular in shape with the flaring nostrils of the square ended snout at the flat base of the figurine. There are circular indentations to either side of the head, representing small eyes and small vertical grooves, perhaps representing hair across either side of the snout. There are possible traces of small oval shaped ears above the eyes. Behind the snout there are possible front legs depicted by vertical grooves and the shoulders are slightly rounded giving them a welll muscled look. The inside of the figurine is solid at its base but hollow where it is broken, whether this is original or due to damage and wear is not clear. The outer face of the copper-alloy has a black patina with patches of light green corrosion products.

No parallel could be found for this figurine it does not seem to be Roman in style so is perhaps more likely to be medieval or later in date.
