Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A sequence of color-coded diagrams showing homology between the pectoral fin bones of lobe-finned fish (Eusthenopteron), elpistostegalian fish (Panderichthys, Tiktaalik, Elpistostege), and tetrapods (Acanthostega). All fins and forelimbs are depicted in left lateral view. All fins and forelimbs are depicted as leaning down at a sharp angle, though the fish species likely pointed their fins back at a shallower angle in life. Not to scale with each other. Dotted lines approximately indicate the extent of lepidotrichia (fin rays) encasing the bony components.
  • Eusthenopteron foordi (mosaic of specimens, left fin), based on diagrams by Andrews & Westoll (1970). Distal preaxial radial 2 is homologized to an intermedium and axial mesomere 3 is homologixed to an ulnare, according to Long et al. (2006) and Boisvert et al. (2008).
  • Panderichthys rhombolepis (GIT 434-1, right fin reversed), based on diagrams by Boisvert et al. (2008). The intermedium is interpreted as a single-part bone, with the distal element interpreted as a radial according to Cloutier et al. (2020).
  • Tiktaalik roseae (mosaic of specimens, right fin reversed), based on diagrams by Shubin et al. (2006). The intermedium is interpreted as a single-part bone, with the distal element interpreted as a radial according to Cloutier et al. (2020).
  • Elpistostege watsoni (MHNM 06-2067, left fin), based on diagrams by Cloutier et al. (2020).
  • Acanthostega gunnari (MGUH 1227, left forelimb), based on diagrams by Coates (1996). Unossified carpals or scutes are not illustrated.
