English: The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite flew over Argentina on December 21, 2016, and acquired a true-color image of multiple fires and plumes of smoke.

The fires are located near the towns of Valle Daza (south) and Santa Isabel (north), both located in La Pampas Province. When viewed at high resolution (500 m) it can be seen that most of the red hotspots are located near the edges of large burn scars – blackened areas where vegetation has been consumed by fire. While it is not possible to determine with certainty the cause of a blaze from satellite imagery, active fires ringing a large burned area typically indicate a wildfire.

These were not the only fires burning in the region in December. According to the Pan America Health Organization (PAHO), a wildfire had affected more than 40,000 hectares of mountains and grasslands close to Algarrobo, south of Bahia Blanca city in mid-December. On December 15, that fire had been reported controlled, but not extinguished.
