Description
English: Smoke filled the skies over Australia’s Northern Territory in mid-May 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the smoky scene on May 14.

Each red hot spot marks an area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected high temperatures. When combined with gray smoke, as in this image, such hot spots are diagnostic for actively burning fire.

The Northern Territory government reported a number of active bushfires in the “Top End” – the most northerly part of Northern Territory burning on May 14. However, the government was also conducting a number of fuel-reduction burns. These types of burns are deliberately set and controlled carefully to manage both agricultural lands and, primarily, grasslands or forests. By burning an area in a controlled manner early in the dry season, which runs from April to September in this region, reduces the dry fuel on the ground later in the season, thus reducing the risk of large and damaging bushfires.
