On August 31, 2017 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of fires in northern Australia.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On August 31, 2017 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of fires in northern Australia.

Numerous red hotspots are scattered across both the Northern Territory (east) and Western Australia (west). Each red mark is an area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected high temperatures. When accompanied by typical smoke such hotspots mark actively burning fires. In several locations the hotspots are located on the edge of black areas. These are burn scars, where fire has consumed the vegetation and left the land blackened while the fires along the edge advance into fresh fuel.

Warm and dry conditions across Australia are creating dangerous fire hazards throughout the country. On August 31, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reported that bushfire conditions, especially in eastern Australia, will be at “near record values” following what appears to be the driest winter since 2002.
