Notes | Flag staff fitting in form of "little idealised Maori heads cast in bronze and gun-metal". One of the gifts to HMS New Zealand of the Auckland Club presented during the 1913 visit of New Zealand's battlecruiser. It was intended as a fitting for the staff used to fly pennants on the pinnacles of HMS New Zealand. Reference from Auckland Star, Volume XLIV, Issue 153, 28 June 1913, Page 9 ‘AKE, AKE, AKE’ AUCKLAND CLUB’S PRESENTATION TO DEPARTING BATTLESHIP … about 100 members of the Auckland Club visited the ship and asked Capt. Halsey, on behalf of the officers and men, to accept several little parting mementoes of their visit to Auckland. Col. J.R. Reed K.C. as president of the Club, presented … – little idealised Maori heads cast in bronze and gun-metal, which are to be fitted to the tops of the staffs on which the pinnacle pennants fly. The latter presentation was the result of a suggestion by the prime Minister on the occasion when the officers of the warship were the guests of the Club a month ago.” | |||||||||||||||||||||||
