Summary
[edit]DescriptionFleishhacker Pool house.jpg |
In its day, San Francisco's Fleishhacker Pool (see also Fleishhacker Pool on the S.F. Zoo site) was the largest swimming pool in the country, a whopping 1000 feet long, 150 feet wide, and re-filled daily with 6 million gallons of seawater pumped in fresh (and icy cold) from the bay. The pool was closed and filled over in the 70s. As you walk across the San Francisco Zoo's parking lot today, it's hard to imagine that all of this vast space was once a massive public swimming pool. But the pool house, although boarded and condemned, remains standing as the last reminder of what used to be. How many public pools built today have such architectural detail or such grand civic ambition?
