Summary

[edit]
Description Monumental brass, c.1380s, Fletching Church, Sussex, Sir Walter Dalyngrygge and wife. Arms of Dalyngrygge depicted on his tunic: Argent, a cross engrailed gules. It is the oldest example of a canopy in the country, and is unusual because of the central shaft between them. He is depicted in full armour of the mixed mail and plate period, hands together in prayer, feet resting upon a lion. His lady has a small dog at her feet. The sides of the table tomb are panelled as if to contain weepers. His elder brother Sir Edward Dalyngrigge (c. 1346 – 1393/4), fought at Crecy and Poitiers and was a favourite of Richard II and built Bodiam Castle. Originally there was a beautiful stone canopy which fell after 1820 and was lost. It was probably fan vaulted and richly coloured with mediaeval paint.
