In the middle of an eight-hour firefight against insurgents, U.S. Army Spc. Brit B. Jacobs (right), a combat medic from Sarasota, Fla., guides U.S. Army Spc. Ronnie Vargas, a mortar man from Alice, Texas, to an awaiting medevac on a remote hilltop in the Shal Valley in eastern Afghanistan's Nuristan Province Nov. 7.
