A farmer sowing a field at Kibbutz Gvulot in the Negev. חקלאי חורש שדה בקיבוץ גבעות שבנגב בתמונה נראה דן צירקין, אחד מחברי הגרעין (ארצי-ישראלי ג', שייסד מאוחר יותר את קיבוץ חצור) בזריעת שדה חולי ליד "מצפה גבולות" בשנת 1944. התיישבות במצפה גבולות על ידי קבוצת גרעין קטנה במאי 1943 הייתה בעלת משמעות היסטורית והיא פריצת הדרך להתיישבות היהודית במרחבי הנגב. דן צירקין מספר כשהגיע לגבולות בספטמבר 1944 עם התחלת הזריעה בשדות, הוא נשבה על ידי הנוף המיוחד, המרחבים, האתגר החקלאי ומהתנאים המיוחדים של הנגב. עד עזיבתם של קבוצת הגרעין ב-1946 (בכדי להקים את חצור) התרכז צירקין בעבודה החקלאית במצפה. "בעצם אפשר להגיד, שאנו ניגשים בלי כל ידיעה למה שמחכה לנו פה. איננו יודעים באיזה כלים צריך לעבד את האדמות, כדי להכשיר אותן לנתינת יבולים... ברור לנו, שהן מדולדלות מאוד... שלוש מאות דונם של הניסיונות מחלוקים ל-20 חלקות, המיועדות לבחינת זנים שונים של שעורה וחיטה..." בעת שהותו במצפה גבולות מרכז חייו של צירקין היה הניסיונות לגידולי השדה: בדיקת זנים שונים, מרווחי זריעה, דישון וזריעה באזורים שונים ועוד.. עם עזיבתו למען הקמת חצור אמר:" בנו מוכרחה להיות האמונה שעם פיתוחה של הארץ, הנגב יהיה אחד האזורים בעל הסיכויים הגדולים ביותר. שבעזרת המדע והטכניקה אפשר לחולל בו גדולות וליצור שם התיישבות צפופה.."
