Description

PACIFIC OCEAN (June 19, 2012) The guided-missile frigate USS Nicholas (FFG 47) transits through international waters off the coast of Central America during the pursuit and interception of a suspected drug smuggling boat. A U.S. Coast Guard gunner firing from a helicopter deployed from Nicholas disabled the engines of the fleeing small boat. Nicholas, with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement detachment, was on patrol in the region as part of Operation Martillo, a U.S., European, and western hemisphere partner nation effort targeting illicit trafficking routes in coastal waters along the Central American isthmus.
