Summary
[edit]DescriptionFlood in Portland Feb 1996 - area NW of Steel Bridge.jpg | Looking southeast from the Broadway Bridge at the peak of the Willamette River's flooding in Portland, Oregon, during the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996. The river's level had reached the bottom of the Steel Bridge, and the bridge was temporarily closed to all traffic (for almost 48 hours) as a safety precaution. In the foreground, the marina, gazebo and walkway in front of the McCormick Pier Apartments are submerged. The river had crested around 7 p.m. the night before this, and it had receded about 6 to 8 inches by this time. The Burnside Bridge had been closed to traffic since the evening of February 8, and is seen in the raised position here; it reopened on February 11. The Steel Bridge's upper deck reopened on February 11, its lower deck on February 13. |
