JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, Flemish
(active 1150s in Meuse area) Floreffe Bible c. 1156 Manuscript (Add. Ms. 17727-38, 2 volumes), 479 x 325 mm British Library, London This monumental Bible originates from the Premonstratensian abbey at Floreffe near Namur. It is one of the chief works of Romanesque book illumination of significance from the Meuse area. Its illustrations present highly imaginative theological symbols and allegories with the greatest artistic skill. The unknown miniaturists seem to have been inspired by contemporary metalwork, perhaps from portable altars decorated with pictorial images. The illustration shown here (volume 2, folio 199r) represents the Resurrection at the beginning of the Gospel according to John.
