Title |
Portrait of Maria de' Medici, half-length |

Description |
"This portrait of Maria de’ Medici is closely related to a full-length portrait by Santi di Tito, commissioned on the occasion of Maria’s marriage in 1600 and now in the Pitti Palace, Florence (fig. 1). The present lot likely postdates that example, and possibly commemorates the birth of her first child in 1601. The prominent hair ornament, turned to be more visible to the viewer, includes a large ruby known to belong to Maria de’ Medici, as well as the gold fleur-de-lis or iris, which was an emblem of both the Medici family and the French kings. A similar hair ornament appears in a later anonymous portrait now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (fig. 2). We are grateful to Dr. Elizabeth Pilliod for assistance in the cataloging of this lot. Dr Pilliod has suggested an attribution to Santi di Tito, possibly with his son, Tiberio Titi." |
