  • Significance: Located in the County Seat of Fluvanna, the Fluvanna County Jail stands proudly as a memorial to the unprecedented construction and growth in Virginia during the early 19th century. The jail, designed by General John Hartwell Cocke in 1828, was built at the foot of the courthouse green on a knoll, high above the Rivanna River to perpetuate justice in the expanding county. Now a museum, the stone jail laid in Flemish bond still stands as a monument to the history of Fluvanna County and its people.
