English: Epifluorescence micrographs of free-swimming dinospores and Amoebophrya sp. within Akashiwo sanguinea. Amoebophrya sp. exhibited green autofluorescence throughout its life cycle and A. sanguinea showed red fluorescence under the blue light excitation. (A) Free-living dinospores of Amoebophrya sp. (B) Uninfected A. sanguinea. (C) Twelve hours infection showing a very early trophont surrounded by the red fluorescing chloroplasts of A. sanguinea. (D) Thirty hours infection showing a mid trophont surrounded by the red fluorescing chloroplasts of A. sanguinea and took on a “beehive” appearance. (E) Fifty-four hour infection showing a mature trophont and the parasites filled almost the entire host cell; the remnants of the host chloroplasts (arrow) were also shown. (F) Seventy hours infection showing a free-swimming Amoebophrya sp. vermiform and the remaining host cell fragments. Scale bars = 20 μm. |
