Description

Para proteger Lisboa da 3ª Invasão Napoleónica, as forças anglo-lusas estabeleceram em torno da capital do reino um sistema defensivo estruturado que incluía duas linhas defensivas ligando o Oceano Atlântico ao Rio Tejo, num total de 152 obras militares edificadas entre 1809 e 1811.

O Forte da Feira encontra-se inserido na segunda Linha Defensiva, integrando-se num núcleo das Linhas onde se regista um dos mais elevados número de redutos, posicionados para defender as estradas Torres – Lisboa; Mafra – Lisboa.

Localizando-se na Vila da Malveira, o Forte da Malveira assumiu o nome da feira instituída por D. Maria I em 25 de Março de 1783.

Aquando da construção do Forte da Feira o núcleo urbano estaria restrito a uma área junto da capela de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, mas a área anexa ao local onde se implantou o forte era recorrentemente frequentada para a referida feira.
