Summary
[edit]DescriptionFossiliferous limestone (Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian; Taylor & Bell Quarry, near Marble Cliff, Ohio, USA) 4 (40306446030).jpg |
Gastropod in fossiliferous limestone from the Devonian of Ohio, USA. The Ohio Senate Building is located immediately east of the Ohio Statehouse at Capitol Square in downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was built in the earliest 1900s. Like the adjacent Statehouse, much of the Senate Building is constructed of local bedrock building stone - fossiliferous limestones of the Columbus Limestone (Middle Devonian), derived from a quarry on the eastern side of the Scioto River in northwest-central Franklin County, Ohio. Shown here is an exterior stairstep of Columbus Limestone with a high-spired gastropod. The gastropods (snails & slugs) are a group of molluscs that occupy marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Most have a calcareous external shell (the snails). Some lack a shell completely, or have reduced internal shells (the slugs & sea slugs & pteropods). Most members of the Gastropoda are marine. Most marine snails are herbivores (algae grazers) or predators/carnivores. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda Stratigraphy: Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian Provenance: Taylor and Bell Quarry, east of the Scioto River, west-northwest of downtown Columbus, central Ohio, USA (vicinity of 39° 58' 47.89" North latitude, 83° 03' 31.12" West longitude) Locality: exterior stairstep, eastern side of the Ohio Senate Building, Capitol Square, downtown Columbus, Ohio, USA See info. at: geosurvey.ohiodnr.gov/portals/geosurvey/PDFs/Education/el... |
