Nahant.
Wednesday evg.
Dear papa,
Your note by Mr Chadwick was the first intimation we had of our great loss - & I need not say what a shock it was. But it was well that we got all the details with the news – for even with those it is so difficult to believe. It quite stuns me & I cannot at all think of it as a reality.
But how mercifully easy it seems to have been & what [p. 2] a relief to you all that there was no prolonged suffering which I always feared for dear Uncle Sam he was so sensitive to illness.
There are many comforting circumstances, & after his good & useful life one ought to rejoice in has peaceful rest ‘where his works do follow him’ but it is most painful to think we have looked our last on his venerable & beloved form –
Poor Aunt Sam – may God support her & Maria under such a sudden blow.
We shall come up to din [p. 3] ner on Friday in the carriage & return after the funeral for I could not rest away from the children & think I can bear the drive
I shall be obliged to Harriot for her help in any thing she thinks I may need.
A pair of gloves 6 ¾ ins I sh’d like –
I can no more tonight.
Yr loving & sympathizing
Fanny –
