Summary

[edit]
Description Maltese fortifications surrounding the Three Cities, Valletta and its suburb Floriana bristle with devices to make it impossible for an enemy to attack and enter the fortified enclaves. These devices included glacis which made impossible for enemy troop to advance without being noticed. These glacis gave an open vista to the defenders over their enemies as the latter would not have anything to shelter behind when shot at. A typical example of such a glacis is that of Pieta which was still bare of any trees up to the early twentieth century when trees were planted flanking a new road leading up to Porte Des Bombes. As further precautions against sudden attacks outposts or as known in Maltese Gardjola were built to give a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area. Most of these ‘Gardjola’ were decorated with stone eyes and ears signifying that they were always all seeing and listening for any attack. Some of them are in disrepair but Heritage Malta has taken in hand to restore them, to their pristine beauty. - MALTA
