Description
English: About half way between the town and fhe Glen Nevis Youth Hostel the artistically refurbished Curling Ponds date back to the 1880's when this patch of ground between the river Ness and the dead-end road leading up into the mountains was given to the Lochaber Curling Club by the Fairfax-Lucy family. Games were played here right up to the 1970's when the sweepers hung up their brooms due to the combined effects of unpredictable ice at such low altitudes and the easy availability of indoor facilities, although in suitable conditions stones still slide down the sheet, end after end! Curling is peculiar to Scotland as spelling bees are to the USA, though our diaspora has spread the habit in its wake. All curling "stones" are fashioned from granite quarried from Ailsa Craig, off the coast of my home county of Ayrshire, maybe when I get old, I'll slide a stone or two.
