Summary[edit]

Description

Tower of the Old Church of All Saints (<a href="http://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-355756-tower-of-the-old-church-of-all-saints-tr" rel="nofollow">Grade II*</a>), Long Marston, Tring Rural, Hertfordshire.

The church was a chapel of ease in Tring parish, with an aisleless nave, chancel, and south porch, dating to the 12th century. They were demolished in 1882 (according to a sign on the site) or 1883 (according to a website) and incorporated into a new church in the village, but the 15th century tower was left. The chapel became unsafe towards the end of the 18th century, due to insecure foundations and dammp, and was also considered too small. The last noted event was a wedding on 27 April 1882.

The tower was infested with ivy, inhabited by feral pigeons and jackdaws, and crumbling until 2001 when funds were raised locally and grants were offered from English Heritage, Hertfordshire Environmental Landfill Partnership, and Dacorum Borough Council, and the tower was restored and made safe.

Hertfordshire GOC's 12 October 2013 walk, which was an 11-mile circular walk from Cheddington railway station in Buckinghamshire, visiting the villages of Long Marsden and Marsworth, mostly following the Grand Union Canal, including the Aylesbury arm.
