| Description |
Português: Garajau-comum, Sterna hirundo (Linnaeus 1758) Garajau-comum, Sterna hirundo (Linnaeus 1758). Ave que está presente em todas as ilhas do arquipélago, nidificando na costa, em rochas e ilhéus pouco perturbados, assim como junto aos portos de pesca. É considerada uma ave estival nidificante, pois só está presente no arquipélago da Madeira durante o período de reprodução, que ocorre entre março e outubro. É uma ave bastante territorial, atacando quem se aproxime dos seus ninhos. Pelo facto de não ter plumagem impermeável, raramente pousa diretamente no mar, optando por pousar sobre pequenos pedaços de madeira ou bóias. Alimenta-se de pequenos peixes, crustáceos e insetos. É frequente observar-se esta ave em disputa com as gaivotas pela captura de peixe. |
