English: The distinctive gorget of a German Feldgendarm
during World War II (Feldgendarmerie Ringkrage) with bullet holes from a retaliation execution at a German POW camp near Saltfjellet, Norway. Shortly after the German surrender 1945 and the camp was liberated, the most brutal guard, a Croatian, was bound to a tree and shot to death by a POW from Serbia using the gorget as a bulls eye on the guard's chest.
The Feldgendarmerie were a type of military police units of the armies of the Kingdom of Saxony (from 1810), the German Empire and Nazi Germany until the conclusion of World War II in Europe. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Feldgendarmerie were reintroduced into the Wehrmacht. The new units received full infantry training and were given extensive police powers. Photo taken on May 8, 2019 at the Lofoten War Memorial Museum (Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum) in Svolvær, Norway. The museum exhibits uniforms, militaria, smaller items, memorabilia, etc. related to World War II and the German occupation of Norway 1940 – 1945.
