Description

Seventeen-year-old Malala Yousafzai is no stranger to the media. Shot in the head when she was 15 by the Taliban, Malala is a campaigner for girls' education. She is also the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

"A girl is a human being and she should be respected. A boy has the right to live his life the way he wants and a girl should too. The best solution is to educate the girls. Let's educate her and make her independent.

“When a girl gets independent she realises she's a person. She's a human being, she has equal rights like men have. She's not only a wife and daughter - she's a woman too."

"Traditions are not sent from heaven, they are not sent from God. It is we who make cultures and we have the right to change it and we should change it."

On 22 July 2014, the UK government and UNICEF hosted the first Girl Summit, aimed at mobilising domestic and international efforts to end female genital mutilation and child, early and forced marriage within a generation.
