Giuseppe Placido Benedetto (1766-1802) era il nono figlio di Vittorio Amedeo III e rimase celibe. Il Vesme (II,1966, p. 441) riporta un pagamento del 1768 al pittore Giuseppe Duprà (1703-1784) "per un ritratto originale del R. Conte di Moriena, et per una copia del medesimo, d'ordine del Duca di Savoia £ 243: 15", che però non è possibile mettere in relazione con questo dipinto per la data troppo precoce. Nel 1881 il quadro risulta relegato nel Magazzino del mobiliare delle soffitte, mentre nel 1911 si trovava al piano terra, nella stanza retrostante l'attuale Alcova nell'appartamento del Re.
