Notes Royal Flying Corps flying helmet - belonged to Flight Sub-Lieutenant Harold Winstone Butterworth, 18 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, WW1 Butterworth, from Auckland, lost his life on 16 July 1917 during a bombing raid when his aircraft was brought down over France - see person record for details. "Flight Sub-Lieut. H. W. Butterworth, Royal Flying Corps, who was previously reported missing, has now been reported by the War Office to have been killed. The War Office states that information has been received from a reliable source that the aeroplane was shot down by infantry in the night 15th-16th July, and he was buried at Garvin (sic) on July 17th. Lieut. Butterworth was a splendid officer, and everyone who knew him admired him for his many sterling qualities. His people live at Mt. Albert, Auckland."
