| Description |
In 1966 the Gonzen ore mine near Sargans was decommissioned. The army planned in the seventies to use this doorway and the following tunnels in case of war as a passageway. This is the doorway from inside at 641.7 m ü.M. (2105 ft ASL). From here there is a connection down to the main entrance that is 155 m lower and in a distance of 3.7 km. It was an escape tunnel in the dispositive of the army, to have a protected way from the area Oberschan and the large fortress Magletsch down to Sargans. An employee of the mine had mounted special signposts at that time along the whole route in the tunnels. In 1985 a group of senior officers has gone the path through the mountain. They have measured everywhere the width and height of the tunnels. Because only a few people knew of this strategic project, it passed into oblivion. This report shows the special passageway for the soldiers, and a few things on the edge. A photo from outside of the Wolfsloch doorway I have already taken in 2013 and it can be seen in the album.
