Português: Grande incêndio no Lombo dos Aguiares. Fotografia de Virgílio Gomes, 8 de agosto de 2016. Ao longo do dia 8 de agosto de 2016, com forte vento Leste e uma alta temperatura, toda a ilha da Madeira foi pasto de enormes incêndios, registando-se 4 mortos na cidade do Funchal, que se encontravam acamados e não foi possível retirar a tempo. A situação mais grave registou-se no Funchal, onde hotéis, dois hospitais e vários lares de idosos foram evacuados por precaução, e mais de 1000 pessoas foram retiradas de suas casas, chegando, no fim do dia os incêndios ao centro do Funchal e atingindo a zona histórica de São Pedro. Pelo menos 27 casas foram destruídas, tal com a emblemática Quinta do Monte e o hotel Choupana Hills, situado na Choupana, consumidos pelas chamas que se alastraram pelas serras, sendo os danos materiais incalculáveis. |
