Description
Interlingue: Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), in the former priory of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Malta, the collections of the Granet museum, 14th to 18th century paintings section. Gaspard de Gueidan dressed as mortar president of the parliament of Provence by Hyacinthe Rigaud, oil on canvas finished in 1724. The genesis of this work is quite chaotic. Commissioned in 1719 in the wake of a first bust portrait, it underwent many modifications from 1720 to 1724 according to the reversals of the sponsor ; delivered in 1725, paid in 1734, it was finally modified by a painter from Aix (perhaps Claude Arnulphy or more probably Joseph André Cellony, pupil of Hyacinthe Rigaud) who repainted the costume in 1740, Gaspard de Gueidan having acquired on this date the position of mortar president in the parliament of Provence.
