Summary[edit]
DescriptionGresham Central MAX station in 1989 with outbound train arriving.jpg |
Gresham Central MAX station, known as Gresham Transit Center for buses (and formally as Gresham Central Transit Center) in 1989, when the outermost two-mile section of the then-one-route MAX system, in Gresham, was still mostly single-track. (And this was the only station located on a single-track section.) In this photo, an outbound train led by car 118 is arriving, and in the background a bus is laying over on line 9-Powell. (The bus had been mistakenly, temporarily fitted with an old rollsign, showing the route name in all capital letters, a style that had been out of use at TriMet since 1986). In 1995–96, the single-track section of what was then the Portland area's only light rail line was converted to double-track, and single-track operation did not return to the MAX system until the opening of the Airport line (Red Line), in 2001. Note the "Central" sign on the shelter's roof. Although the MAX station and bus transit center have been a single facility since the MAX line was built, TriMet regularly refers to the facility as "Gresham Transit Center" (or Gresham TC), without "Central", for buses, and often as "Gresham Central station" for MAX, particularly in the line's early years. |
