Description
English: A grinderman with his railgrinder. A railgrinder was equipped with two abrasive blocks, seen here in front of the machine on the left side of the photo. These blocks rubbed the tracks to remove irregularities, thus enabling trams to roll along the rails without friction. Due to the railgrinder's low speed, the grinderman usually worked overnight. Like trams, the railgrinder and other rail maintenance vehicles were often powered by electricity.
