Description

500px provided description: Off the shore of southern Peru, near Paracas and Pisco, lie the islas ballestas, also called "poor man's Galapagos" because of the abundant wildlife, including the Humboldt Penguin and the Peruvian Booby.

Thanks to the the many birds on the islands, the rocks are covered in guano. Guano consists of accumulated excrements of sea birds and bats. It is collected and used as fertilizer. Every few years, the accumulated guano is collected by the Peruvian government.
