Description |
English: HMS 'General Wolfe' Inscribed by the artist, lower right, 'General Wolf[e]'. This is a not particularly accurate port-broadside drawing of the monitor 'General Wolfe' (1915) fitted with an 18-inch gun aft and a twin 12-inch gun turret forward. The 18-inch gun was fitted at Portsmouth Dockyard in July 1918 and her gun trials were carried out off the Isle of Wight on 7 August. The 18-inch gun was on a fixed mounting and was permanently aimed to starboard, with two pom-pom guns fitted on top of its housing, as shown here. The vesselwas built by Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd at Hebburn, on the Tyne,was launched on 9 September 1915 and completed on 9 November. She served at Dover throughout the war and was broken up at Hayle from December 1923. [BTodd/PvdM 2/13] |
