Description |
English: HMS 'Lion': a study for the Battle of Jutland Inscribed 'Lion' by the artist, lower right. This is the battlecruiser 'Lion' (1910), shown with her main armament trained to starboard and in starboard-bow view, in the period June 1916 to mid-1917. Her torpedo nets have been removed (done when she was was repaired after the Battle of Jutland) but her foretop has not yet been enlarged. In the preface to his co-authored book 'More Sea Fights of the Great War' (1919) Wyllie expressly states that when sketching warships on the spot after battles, in order to make pictures of them, it was with 'the guns being specially trained and elevated to the correct position', thanks to the co-operation of the Navy.
