Chromosphere of the Sun in the H-alpha spectral line

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Movie of the solar chromosphere observed with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma, Spain. The movie shows many examples of spicules: thin, elongated jets of a few hundred kilometers wide that can reach up to heights of 6000 km and that can move at speeds of more than 100 km/s. The movie further shows a surge: a larger scale eruption that ejects plasma up to a height of about 22000 km above the surface. This false colour movie is made from monochromatic images taken at a

wavelength of 656.25 nm, an offset of -0.05 nm from the H-alpha spectral line, which is equivalent to a Doppler offset of -24 km/s. It therefore preferentially shows chromospheric plasma flows that are moving towards the observer.

Instrument : Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope / CRISP wavelength : H-alpha blue wing 656.3 - 0.05 nm (Doppler offset -24 km/s) duration : 28 min target : active region AR11778 close to the limb at (x,y) = (914", -127")

Observation : Luc Rouppe van der Voort (University of Oslo, Norway)
