Title |
handaxe |
||
Description |
English: A large ovate handaxe in brown, river-stained flint; complete but for part of the butt broken after deposition but showing some patination. 2 thermal spall pits are on one side meeting the distal edge. A pot-lid pit is also on the opposite side towards the butt. The axe has many thermal cracks and might have broken up soon from exposure. One side had barnacles and the axe has lain on a shingle bank for some time, exposed by low tide. The piece is all over invasively flaked with feathered terminations indicating a good soft hammer technique. There is a little flint nodule cortex on the surviving butt, making a good grip. Another patch is on one face, towards the distal end. The edge is worked to a sharp straight edge on one side to the tip with some abrasion,probably from use and the opposite edge is more wavy and perhaps not used as intensively.The profile is symmetrical with a slightly concave blade reaching to nearly half way back from the tip and a convex hand-hold towards the butt. |
