Hans Hollein was concerned that Vienna was suffocating under the weight of Imperial and Jugendstil nostalgia and that contemporary city architecture had stagnated. In 1990 he came up with this building as the antidote, a postmodern mash-up directly opposite the gothic Stephandom cathedral! The citizens were not initially convinced but apparently now love the building. But, I’m not convinced! While I enjoy Postmodern design in general the Haas-Haus does little to comment on, and play off, its historic environment. Where is the ironic twist? Where is the cheeky subversion? I think it should do more than reflect the past in its large glass panels and instead make a comment that leverages the past to offer a glimpse of the future. Mmmm, OK, easier said than done. |
