Summary

[edit]
Description
English: ATSF 3353

A Roger Puta Photograph
The train is southwest of Martinez, CA on a one percent downhill grade. The line was still dispatched by train orders with hand throw switches for meets from Richmond to Stockton. Roger selected this spot since the area still had upper Quadrant semaphores in use in this ABS territory between Richmond and Pittsburg.
Known as “Bellringers” by engine crews, this was standard ATSF “Valley Division” power in the 1970 and 80s. (The 4 axle GP-30 and GP-35 locos were known to always have “alarm bell” ringings, signifying some sort of mechanical ailment.) This small power was used from Richmond to Bakersfield on the flat land Valley Division. At the latter point, larger 6 axle SD and GE units took the trains east over Tehachapi and on eastward to KC, Texas or Chicago.

The above commentary is from Phil Gosney, a railfan friend of Roger's.
