Summary[edit]

Description

Heures de Maréchal de Boucicaut

This is just one of the dozens of stunning images to be found in the Boucicaut Hours, painted by an artist now known as the Boucicaut Master. The owner and commissioner of the work, a Marshall Boucicaut, is a fascinating and colorful character; the many saints represented in the pages of the Books of Hours are represented in beautiful detail and with interesting imagery. The image on your right is that of the Arma Christi (the arms (objects, weapons) of Christ at the Crucifixion - the Arma Christi became a very popular meditative image, as Gothic readers/viewers would gaze upon the fragments and reconstruct Christ’s suffering for themselves. This is a paper for someone who is interested in the personal devotion of Books of Hours, who enjoys looking at multiple images before focusing on three or four, who is interested in the saints, and who loves manuscripts.
