Mount Sorrel - Canadian Memorial The Battle of Mont Sorrel (Hill 62), a World War I operation by three divisions of the British Second Army and three divisions of the German Fourth Army in the Ypres Salient, Belgium, from 2 to 14 June 1916. In an effort to pull British resources from the observed build-up in the Somme, the Germans attacked an arc of high ground positions, defended by the Canadian Corps. The German forces initially captured the heights before entrenching on the far slope of the ridge. Following a number attacks and counterattacks, two divisions of the Canadian Corps, supported by the 20th Light Division and Second Army siege and howitzer battery groups, recaptured the majority of their former positions. De slag om Mont Sorrel (Hill 62), tijdens WO I door drie divisies van het Britse Tweede Leger en de drie divisies van het Duitse Vierde Leger in de Ieperboog, België van 2 tot 14 juni 1916. In een poging om Britse middelen te onttrekken van de waargenomen opbouw in de Somme, vielden de Duitsers de hoger gelegen posities aan, verdedigd door het Canadese Corps. De Duitse troepen veroverden aanvankelijk de hoogtes en groeven zich in aan de andere zijde van de heuvelrug. Na een aantal aanvallen en tegenaanvallen, ondersteund door de 20e Light Division, het Tweede Leger en houwitser groepen, konden twee divisies van het Canadese Corps de meeste van hun vroegere posities heroveren. |
