Description
English: A U.S. Navy Hiller HTE-2 (BuNo 129770) flies over a Douglas R4D-5 (BuNo 17221) at Naval air Station Oakland, California (USA), on 5 June 1953. The red fuselage band normally identified aircaft assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Reserve.
The R4D-5 17221 was delivered in May 1944. Following various assignements, it was converted to an LC-47H in 1963 and assigned to Air Development Squadron 6 (VX-6) for service in Antarctica. During its service it was named "Kool Kiwi", "Yankee Tiki A Te Hau", "Mutha Goose", and "The Emperor". It was withdrawn from use on 18 April 1969 and is on permanent loan from the U.S. Government to the City of Christchurch, New Zealand, to honour the relationship between Christchurch and the U.S. Antarctic Program. It is on display at the Ferrymead Aeronautical Society, Christchurch, New Zealand.
