Photograph of Hopi girls learning to sew, ca.1898. Two matrons, two maidens, and three small children sit on blankets on the ground in the shade of an adobe wall behind them. One matron is sewing. The other matron is looking straight ahead while holding an infant on her lap. Another child faces her as well. The two maidens sit between the matrons talking to each other. A man sits on a chair at right. He wears pants, long-sleeved shirt, belt, moccasins, and a bandana.
