Notes For other French 16c bindings see Marie-Pierre Laffitte & Fabienne Le Bars, Reliures royales de la Renaissance, Paris, 1999. Machi states; au semé and branchages decoration attributed to the Éve bindery. This last is featured by motifs in form of curved olive or laurel shoots used on French bindings from c. 1580 till 1630. It adorns à la fanfare compartments as well as current bindings of that period in the covers' middle (interlaced in form of crown), in the corners and in the spine. This decoration has been even applied on XIX th bindings in retrospective style. The corner winged cherubs within branchages, available silver decorated too (Librairie Sourget, Cent livres précieux de 1469 à 1914, n.32 on Sette libri di satire di M. Ariosto, H. Bentivogli, L. Alemanni, P. Nelli, Ant. Vinciguerra, Fra Sansovino, e d'altri scrittori, Venice, Vidali, 1573, with Henri III coat-of-arms provided cover), are not uncommon on French Renaissance bindings (Bibliothèque de Troyes, Reliures du dix-septième siècle, p. 19, n. 19, shelfmark REL. C.16.; Burlington Fine Arts Club, Exhibition of bookbindings, p. 47, pl. LVI on Paulus Melissus, Schediasmata Poetica, Lutetiae, Parisiorum, 1586, owned by the Queen; Det danske Kunstindustrimuseums udstilling 1906, p. 63, n. 44 on Marco Guazzo, Cronica, Venezia, 1553; W. Y. Fletcher, Foreign Bindings in the British Museum, pl. 36; G. D. Hobson, Les reliures à la fanfare, p. 38, fig. 43; J. B. Oldham, Shrewbury School Library Bindings, p. 123, pl. Still adopted in the XVIII th century (J. R. Abbey, Catalogue of valuable printed books and fine bindings, p. 225, lot. 578, pl. 73).
