Notes |
Mid century, Paris, bound for Cardinal de Granvelle (1517-1586) as the central crowned eagle suggests. 6 bindings groups, all kept in Besançon Library (France), have been formed: A) 1 binding (Besançon Library, R. Pole, Pro ecclesiasticae unitatis defensione…., Rome, no date). This atelier worked for J. Grolier and Francis I. B) 8 bindings, excluded the present one. Group featured by brown calf cover, decorated with strapwork, solid tools and one a two-headed crowned eagle. The BL binding pertains therefore to this group (M. Piquard, Les livres du Cardinal de Granvelle 1942, pl. V). Of these 8 volumes, 7 are provided with a lozenge-rectangle decoration and concern Greek manuscripts (Besançon Library, shelfmark MSS. 405, 406, 408, 484, 835, 841,847). One of them, a text of Jamblique, has been copied in 1548 by the scribe Jean Mavromate: its cover appears contemporary. The eighth example (J. Driedo, De concordia libri arbitrii….., Lovanii, Gravius, 1547) is of a different decoration, but should be issued fron the same atelier. C) 3 bindings. Calf provided with solid and azured tools. No ownership mark. Only the title on the edge indicates they were owned by cardinal Granvelle. This atelier worked for J. Grolier. D) 3 bindings. Wax mosaic. Produced c. 1555-1560. E) 2 bindings. Current calf bindings. Few contain Granvelle ex libris. The title is always on the edge. F) 1 binding. Different from all other groups, as it was bound before being offered to Granvelle. It contains A. Brucioli, I Sacri psalmi di David, Venice, 1534. For another French Renaissance binding provided with an analogous crowned eagle, as presentation cover for Charles V and bound for Maximilian I, see One hundred and seventy-six historic and artistic book-bindings, p. 22, XVI th century ms. on vellum |
