Notes Wooden boards. Printed on vellum with vellum endleaves. Rebacked. First half century, France, à gril de St. Laurent binding (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, 80 reliures françaises, p. 2, n. 21). Typical French style for the second half of the XVth and the first half of the XVIth century, decorated with vertical, parallel strips (from 2 to 5), separated by fillets, within a border which imitates a grill. The strips, first obtained with square tools, then with rolls, enlarge towards the border. The internal decoration is carried out with the same ornament repeated along the whole strips' length. From time to time, the decorated strips are alternated with free bands to avoid a too frequent frieze's repetition. Paris and Normandy panel-stamp examples are known which decorate the whole boards. This kind of decoration can be recognized because the rolls do not intersect at the corners of the borders and the fillets are tooled to perfection. Further examples are known from Cologne (F. Macchi - L. Macchi, Il Dizionario, p. 215, Gril).
