Notes | Crucifixion panel stamps were to be found on Parisian à la fanfare too (G. D. Hobson, Les reliures à la fanfare, pl. XIV). Such a panel is to be found: 1) on an unpublished French binding (ca. 1580), kept in Pavia (30 km south from Milan) University Library (Le pseavltier de David, Paris, chez Iamet Mettayer, 1586, shelfmark Teresiana 38 D 1); 2) on a French binding (ca. 1580) kept in London, Victoria and Albert Museum on text Missale Romanum, Antwerp, 1577, shelfmark A.M. 31-1865 (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Bookbindings, p. 44, 85, n. 36, pl. 36). Corner winged cherubs within branches are not uncommon on French bindings (Bibliothèque de Troyes, Reliures du dix-septième siècle, p. 19, n. 19, shelfmark REL. C.16.; Burlington Fine Arts Club, Exhibition of bookbindings, p. 47, pl. LVI on Paulus Melissus, Schediasmata Poetica, Lutetiae, Parisiorum, 1586, owned by the Queen; W. S. Brassington, Historic bindings in the Bodleian Library, p. 34-35, pl. XVI, on Ces presentes heures a lusaige de Rome, Paris, Philippe Pigouchet, 1498, shelfmark Douce 137, printed on vellum; Det danske Kunstindustrimuseums udstilling 1906, p. 63, n. 44 on Marco Guazzo, Cronica, Venezia, 1553; W.Y. Fletcher, Bookbinding in England and in France, p. 22, fig. 5 on Histoire des Faicts des Roys, Paris, 1581; W. Y. Fletcher, Foreign Bindings in the British Museum, pl. 36; G. D. Hobson, Les reliures à la fanfare, p. 38, fig. 43; J. B. Oldham, Shrewbury School Library Bindings, p. 123, pl. XVIII on Antiquitatum romanarum Pauli Mannucci liber de senatu, Venice 1581, shelfmark K VIII 54T; H. B. Wheatley, Les reliures remarquables du Musée Britannnique, p. 78-79, pl. XXXV on L'histoire des faicts gestes et conquestes des Roys, Princes, Seigneurs et peuple de France, Paris, Frederic Morel, 1581 - see C.29.f.16., C.41.b.2., C.68.h.11., Davis 446); this motif is available on silver decorated bindings too (Librairie Sourget, Cent livres précieux de 1469 à 1914, n. 32 on Sette libri di satire di M. Ariosto, H. Bentivogli, L. Alemanni, P. Nelli, Ant. Vinciguerra, Fra Sansovino, e d'altri scrittori, Venice, Vidali, 1573, with Henri III coat-of-arms provided cover. Still used in the 18c (J. R. Abbey, Catalogue of valuable printed books and fine bindings, 21-23 June 1965 p. 225, lot. 578, pl. 73). | |||
