English: On June 7, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Hurricane Bonnie spinning in the Pacific Ocean. The strong, but weakening, storm sported a distinct cloud-free eye and maximum sustained winds of near 90 mph (145 km/h), placing it as a Category 1 system on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. It was located about 500 miles (800 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Hurricane Bonnie first formed as a potential tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin, strengthening to tropical storm strength late on July 1 as it moved westward. Tropical Storm Bonnie passed over Nicaragua on July 2, moving into the Pacific Basin where it began to strengthen. According to Reliefweb, Bonnie brought heavy rainfall which triggered floods in both Nicaragua and El Salvador. At least four fatalities and 12 injured people were reported in Nicaragua, while one person died, and 100 individuals were evacuated in El Salvador.

Bonnie reached peak strength on July 5, attaining Category 3 strength with maximum sustained wind speeds of 115 mph (185 km/h). Fortunately, Hurricane Bonnie has been travelling westward, away from land, and has weakened since that time.

At 0300 UTC July 9 (11:00 p.m. EDT July 8), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) advised that Bonnie had weakened to tropical storm strength, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (96.5 km/h). It was located about 925 mi (1,490 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico and was moving west-northwest. Bonnie is expected to turn more northwesterly and become post-tropical on July 9.
